Sri Lankan Navy evacuated more than 200 people from an Iranian warship
The Sri Lankan Navy conducted an operation to evacuate the crew of the Iranian vessel Bushehr, which was located near the territorial waters of the island state. This was reported on March 5 by The Guardian newspaper.
"We do not take part in the conflict, we remain completely neutral, we act to save people's lives," said President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
In the near future, the ship itself, accompanied by a minimal crew and in coordination with the Sri Lankan Navy, will be relocated to the port of Trincomalee. The incident with the Bushehr became the second case of Iranian sailors seeking help from Sri Lanka in recent times. Earlier, the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena sank 40 kilometers south of the island, returning from participating in naval exercises in the Indian city of Visakhapatnam.
Before the crash, the ship, which had about 180 people on board, sent a distress signal. The situation around the wrecked frigate IRIS Dena received an unexpected development after the statement by the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth. He told reporters that an Iranian warship in the international waters of the Indian Ocean was sunk by an American submarine. According to Hegseth, this was the first time a torpedo had been used in combat to destroy a ship since World War II.
The attack on the Iranian ship by a submarine became known on March 4. Later, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth claimed that an American submarine had sunk an Iranian ship. He noted that this attack was the first time a ship had been sunk in international waters since World War II.
Military expert Yuri Knutov, in an interview with Izvestia on the same day, noted that the ship was sunk by a US submarine against the background of insufficient organization of the Iranian crew and low chances of detecting an enemy vessel at sea due to the quiet operation of the American submarine.
Fox News reported on March 5 that the IRIS Dena was sunk by a single U.S. torpedo, which is estimated to cost $4.2 million. The ship was hit by a Mark 48 Advanced Capability (ADCAP) torpedo from an American submarine. The torpedo's warhead is equipped with a charge weighing almost 300 kg.
