The flagship frigate of the Iranian Navy, IRIS Dena, was sunk by a single US torpedo, which is estimated to cost $4.2 million. This was reported on March 5 by the Fox News channel.

According to the broadcaster, the ship was hit by a Mark 48 Advanced Capability (ADCAP) torpedo from an American submarine. The torpedo's warhead is equipped with a charge weighing almost 300 kg.

It is noted that as a result of the explosion of this torpedo, a huge steam bubble forms, which lifts the stern of the vessel and leads to a fracture of the hull, as well as the subsequent flooding of the ship.

The attack on the Iranian ship by a submarine became known on March 4. Later, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth claimed that an American submarine had sunk an Iranian ship. He noted that this attack was the first time a ship had been sunk in international waters since World War II. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stressed that the United States would regret sinking an Iranian ship in international waters.

According to ADA Derana, Sri Lankan Navy personnel recovered the bodies of 87 people from the water. Another 32 crew members survived and were taken to a local hospital. One of the injured is in the intensive care unit. In total, about 130 sailors were on board the military vessel at the time of the incident, according to official data from the Iranian authorities.
