Alkaline water and products with an alkaline reaction do not significantly affect the acidity of the stomach with a normal diet. Elena Khokhlova, MD, dietitian, told Izvestia about this on March 8.

According to her, the stomach initially works in an extremely acidic environment. The pH level in it is usually in the range of 1.5 to 3.5, which is necessary for the activation of digestive enzymes and effective digestion of food. A decrease in acidity can disrupt digestive processes, but the body has mechanisms that maintain the stability of this environment.

"The stomach has an anatomical feature: fluid quickly passes through its small curvature and stays in it for a short time. Studies have shown that the liquid stays in the stomach for less than 10 minutes and only a small part of it mixes with food," Khokhlova explained.

Therefore, even the use of alkaline water with food practically does not change the overall level of acidity of gastric juice. The bulk of the liquid passes quickly through the stomach, while the food stays there much longer and is exposed to enzymes.

The nutritionist noted that there are relatively few products with an alkaline reaction. These include, for example, crackers, corn, coconuts, dates, and eggs. Among drinks, black tea can have an alkaline reaction. However, even if such products enter the stomach, a possible temporary decrease in acidity is quickly compensated.

"If foods or drinks partially neutralize the acidity, the stomach begins to produce more hydrochloric acid and restores the normal pH level. The body constantly maintains balance due to natural regulatory mechanisms," the specialist said.

At the same time, Khokhlova stressed that all scientific observations were carried out with normal amounts of food. According to her, overeating can have a much greater effect on the functioning of the stomach, the consequences of which for digestion are much more serious.

The expert added that with a normal diet, alkaline drinks and foods can be consumed without fear, since the body is able to independently maintain the necessary acidity of gastric juice.
