Shoigu spoke about Russia's role in resolving the conflict in the Middle East
Russia is in constant contact with Iran and the Gulf States, and is also ready to play an active role in the peace process. This was stated to journalists on March 5 by the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu.
"We are in constant contact with Tehran and the Gulf states. We consider the escalation of the conflict and the increase in civilian casualties to be categorically unacceptable. We are ready to play an active role in the process of peaceful settlement in the Middle East," he said.
According to Shoigu, Russia is currently witnessing "the unceremonious dismantling of the foundations of international law and the destruction of the global security architecture that has been formed for decades."
"Individual countries, guided solely by selfish goals, violate the territorial integrity of sovereign states. Increasingly, force is being used to solve geopolitical problems. Such seemingly long—gone means as piracy are being used," the Security Council secretary said.
What is happening in the Middle East now poses a threat not only to regional stability, but also to global security, including energy and food security, Shoigu concluded.
Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Iran had not asked Russia for help in connection with the military actions. He noted that there are currently no changes on this issue.
At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia, together with its partners, would do everything to help create an atmosphere that would make a military operation against Iran impossible. The diplomat expressed doubt as to how much it would be possible to help by moral and political means, but stressed the need to do everything to make the voice of the overwhelming majority of the world community heard.
