A criminal case was opened in Azerbaijan over the attack of a UAV on Nakhichevan.
A criminal case on the attack of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the city of Nakhichevan was initiated by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This was announced on Thursday afternoon, March 5, by the press service of the department.
"On March 5, an attack was carried out on civilian infrastructure facilities from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran <...> In connection with an attack on civilian infrastructure using drones in Nakhichevan, a criminal case was opened," the Telegram channel said in a statement.
The ministry clarified that the recorded strikes on strategic infrastructure facilities where civilians were located was a "gross violation" of the basic principles of international humanitarian law. As a result of the incident, as stated in the text, four civilians were injured in various ways: one woman born in 1986 and three men, two of whom were born in 1996 and one in 1998.
It is emphasized that representatives of the Prosecutor General's Office of the republic instructed their investigative department to conduct a preliminary investigation into the incident. Currently, the necessary investigative and operational measures are being carried out in the territory where the incident occurred.
The crash of a drone launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran at Nakhichevan airport became known on the same day in the morning. The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan stated that they consider Iran responsible for the incident, against which they have already begun to prepare retaliatory measures.
Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, told Izvestia that the incident could increase tensions in the region, but its consequences would depend on the results of the investigation and the reaction of the parties.
