- The political scientist assessed Canada's possible involvement in conflicts in the Middle East.
Canada's possible participation in international campaigns in the Middle East will primarily be expressed at the political level. The economic consequences for the country in this case may be limited due to the support of the allies. Political scientist and publicist Georgy Dibrov told Izvestia on March 5.
"Canada is a constant participant in the coalition pressure on various countries in the world. The government of the country is interested in military-political conflicts because this is how they try to replenish the economy and earn an internal coalition rating based on the blood and innocent victims of numerous wars," the expert said.
He noted that at the same time, the real risks for Canada itself remain relatively limited. In his opinion, the country's leadership usually takes a position of collective responsibility, relying on the common line of Western states on key geopolitical issues.
The political scientist also drew attention to Canada's historical and political ties with the United Kingdom and the United States, which, according to him, largely determine Ottawa's foreign policy course. In this regard, many States continue to perceive the country as part of a broader Western bloc.
"The complex combination of Canada's allies and their interests makes this country more secure than many EU countries that are under internal pressure from Brussels and NATO. Ottawa can only come under pressure from Britain and the United States for refusing to support what is happening in Iran," Dibrov explained.
In his opinion, Canada's future position will largely depend on the dynamics of the international situation and decisions taken within Western alliances.
On the same day, CNN reported that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he did not rule out the participation of the Canadian Armed Forces in military operations against Iran. When asked by reporters at a briefing if there were any plans in this regard, he replied in the negative. But to the clarifying question of whether the prime minister excludes such a possibility in the future, the politician replied otherwise.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Iran. US President Donald Trump called it the goal of protecting the American people. Israel and the United States have carried out numerous attacks on military and civilian targets in Iran, including a school in the city of Minab. Major Iranian cities, including Tehran, were hit. The Supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died.
In response, Iran launched Operation True Promise 4 and attacked American military bases in the Middle East, as well as Israeli cities. Tehran is attacking the Persian Gulf countries. In Iran itself, according to the Red Crescent Society, at least 555 people were killed due to strikes by Israel and the United States.
