Large poisonous jellyfish have been spotted off the coast of Antalya
Off the coast of Antalya, Turkey, a large cluster of dangerous human jellyfish of the species Rhopilema nomadica, known as nomadic jellyfish, has been recorded. This was announced by Mehmet Gekoglu, a researcher at Akdeniz University, in a comment to the IHA news agency.
"A strong wind has been blowing for 10 days now, which is why currents have carried a huge number of jellyfish inside the Antalya Bay," the publication says.
According to the expert, this species originally lives in the Red Sea, but through the Suez Canal the jellyfish entered the Mediterranean Sea. Over time, they spread from the eastern part of the region and became the largest jellyfish found in this basin.
Gokoglu noted that the accumulation of jellyfish is associated with strong winds and sea currents. According to him, this situation may persist at least until the beginning of May. At the same time, with an increase in water temperature by June, the jellyfish are expected to leave coastal areas.
The scientist warned that jellyfish can reach a weight of up to 10 kg, and the length of their tentacles is about 1.5 m. He recommended that vacationers avoid contact with white formations in the water and do not touch jellyfish washed up on the shore. If they are touched, the specialist advises treating the contact site with ammonia and hot water, as well as using an antihistamine cream.
Olga Trofimova, Associate Professor of the Department of General Biology and Bioecology at the State University of Education, said on January 23 that the jellyfish bite site should be rinsed with seawater and ice applied. She stressed that most jellyfish do not pose a mortal danger to humans, with the exception of species such as the Portuguese ship.
