On February 2, two cubs of the large gerrosaurus, a large lizard native to the arid regions of sub—Saharan Africa and Madagascar, were born at the Moscow Zoo. This was reported on the website of the Moscow City Hall on Wednesday, March 4.

It is noted that while the kids and their parents are in the office premises of the pavilion "Terrarium", so visitors can not see them. Zoo staff closely monitor their growth and development. The report emphasizes that breeding gerrosaurs in captivity is a difficult task.: These reptiles are sensitive to environmental conditions and require strict control of the level of ultraviolet radiation, temperature and humidity. The method of reproduction also creates an additional difficulty — the females bury their eggs deep into the ground. The specialists managed to detect the clutch in time and place the eggs in an incubator, where they stayed for about two months at a temperature of 24-25 degrees, the Moscow City News agency reports.

Cubs, like adults, have a bright color: a green body with red or yellow stripes on the sides. Their diet includes crickets, fruits, vegetables, lettuce leaves and cottage cheese. The sex of the reptiles can be determined by the shape of the head and the presence of special femoral pores in males, writes "Moscow 24".

Gerrosaurs belong to the lizard family of the order skinkiformes. Their body is covered with large shiny scales, and the lateral fold of the skin gives the reptiles additional mobility. These lizards are diurnal and usually bask in the sun to maintain their body temperature.
