"Excessive politicization of such cases goes against the principles of freedom of navigation," RIA Novosti reports.

The diplomatic mission noted that the possible penetration of the icebreaker into the waters of Estonia occurred during a maneuver to free a vessel blocked by ice.

The day before, the Estonian Foreign Ministry summoned Charge d'affaires of Russia Kamran Abilov. The reason for the call was the intention to hand over a note allegedly concerning the procedural rules for the movement of Russian icebreakers in Estonian territorial waters.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 4 that Russia would respond to threats arising from Estonia's new legislation on maritime navigation.
