The doctor named the main reasons for the decrease in libido in men
A decrease in testosterone levels in men after the age of 30 does not always lead to a decrease in sexual desire, since libido is formed under the influence of many factors. A gynecologist-endocrinologist from the Polyclinic clinic network told Izvestia about this.<url>" by Sandra Rshtuni.
According to the expert, the gradual decrease in testosterone levels is indeed a scientifically proven fact, but its effect on sexual desire is not direct.
"Testosterone levels in men after the age of 30 begin to decrease by about 1-1.5% per year. But this indicator may not affect libido at all. There are quite a few studies demonstrating excellent libido in patients with low testosterone levels. Conversely, patients with high testosterone levels may have extremely low sex drive," explained Rshtuni.
The expert emphasized that sexual desire is formed in the brain and depends on a complex set of biological and psychological factors.
"Libido is a complex process where testosterone plays an important role, but far from the only one. Sexual desire is influenced by hormonal fluctuations, chronic diseases such as diabetes or obesity, various infections, as well as anatomical features of the body," the doctor noted.
At the same time, according to her, psychological circumstances also have a significant impact.
"Chronic stress, anxiety and depressive disorders, psychological trauma, relationship problems, and societal pressure play a major role. All these factors can significantly affect the level of sexual desire," added Rshtuni.
The expert also pointed out that a person's lifestyle significantly affects libido.
"It is very important what kind of lifestyle a person leads — active or passive, how they eat and how much they rest. Lack of sleep, overwork and low physical activity are of great importance. In addition, certain medications can affect the formation of sexual desire, which is especially important in the era of widespread use of antidepressants," the specialist explained.
Separately, the doctor noted that there are currently no objective medical indicators that can accurately measure the level of libido.
"As a rule, we are talking about a subjective complaint on the part of the patient about a decrease in sexual desire. There are neurotransmitters and hormones — for example, dopamine, oxytocin, estrogens and testosterone — but none of these indicators reflect the true level of libido," said Rshtuni.
