In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Friday, March 6, and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for March 6

According to the national calendar, Timothy Vesnovey is celebrated on March 6. Our ancestors believed that it was on this day that warm winds began to blow, which drove away the winter. Hence the eloquent names of the holiday — Vesnovey, or Vesnyak. It was believed that after this date, severe cold does not return, and nature begins to gradually wake up.

These observations are reflected in proverbs and sayings: "Timofey is more springy — it's warm at the door," "Spring is blowing and warms the old," "Timofey, no matter how angry the snowstorm, it still blows in the spring." During the holiday, windows and doors were opened in the houses to let in fresh air and sunlight. They also got rid of old things, trying to clean the house of everything superfluous.

The old people, according to custom, moved to the rubble to bask in the sun and stretch out after lying on the stove for a long time. Young people built bonfires on the hills, through which they jumped themselves and drove the cattle away, protecting them from diseases. Torches were lit from the main campfire and walked around the fields with them. This rite was designed to protect the future harvest from hail and the tricks of evil spirits.

According to the weather on Timofey Vesnovey, the peasants predicted what the spring months would be like. According to popular observations, the weather on Timothy will be like this throughout spring. If the day turned out to be clear and sunny, then the whole season will be warm. If a thaw has begun and streams are actively flowing, this means early sowing and a fruitful summer.

Other signs of the day:

  • The swallows have arrived — real warmth will be established soon;
  • The north wind is blowing — spring will be cold;
  • An easterly wind prevails, leading to a dry and warm spring.;
  • birds chirp loudly — for changeable weather;
  • The hares have not changed their white fur coat to a gray one — there will still be snowfalls.

What not to do on March 6th

There were also certain prohibitions associated with the holiday, the violation of which could lead to various troubles. Special caution was shown in relation to nature. It was popularly said that on Timothy Vesnovey the earth begins to wake up, and with it trees and plants come to life. According to legend, disrespect for nature on this day could turn into a crop failure or a series of failures.

What else can not be done on March 6:

  • to plant or replant plants — they will be weak, will not take root or will wither quickly;
  • leaving the house without a cross was considered dangerous because of evil spirits.;
  • Raising your voice at your elders can lead to misfortune.;
  • Gossiping about acquaintances can turn against a person.;
  • drinking alcohol — according to beliefs, a drinker can lose his mind.

What is the church holiday on March 6th?

On March 6 (February 21, Old Style), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Timothy of Olympus, a Christian ascetic who lived in the VIII–IX centuries. According to legend, Timothy left the secular life in his youth and took monastic vows in a monastery at the foot of Mount Olympus, which at that time was one of the famous centers of monasticism.

Timothy's life was spent in a strict ascetic feat. He observed a strict fast, spent a lot of time in solitude and incessant prayer. The monk possessed the gift of healing and helped people who turned to him for spiritual support and comfort. For his righteous life, he was revered as a saint soon after his death.

On the same day, a celebration is held in honor of the Kozelshchanskaya Icon of the Mother of God, one of the most revered miraculous images in southern Russia. The shrine got its name from the place of its veneration — the village of Kozelshchyna in the Poltava province, where a convent was later founded.

The icon is credited with many miraculous healings and cases of spiritual help to believers. Her church-wide veneration began at the end of the 18th century after a patient suffering from a serious leg condition was healed after praying in front of the icon. Soon the icon became an object of pilgrimage for believers, who prayed before the holy image for help and consolation.

Prayers on March 6th

Reverend Timothy of Olympus is addressed with prayers for spiritual perseverance, strengthening faith and help in difficult life circumstances. Traditionally, people pray for health, healing from diseases and family well-being in front of the Kozelshchanskaya icon of the Mother of God. Many also ask for intercession before God, protection from adversity and help in difficult life situations.

"To the Virgin Mother of God, Immaculate Mother of Christ our God, Intercessor of the entire Christian race! Reverently standing before Your miraculous icon, we beseech You to hear us who pray to You: accept our unworthy thanks for all Your ineffable benefits to us, manifested and manifested in this place and in many towns and cities of the Russian land; for You are healing the sick, consoling the sorrowful, correcting and admonishing the erring. May you be a protection and consolation to all of us, a refuge from all evils, troubles and circumstances, from gladness, cowardice, flood, fire, sword, invasion of foreigners, deadly plagues and from evil people's bitterness. <...> intercede from all adversity and preserve with faith and reverence those who flow to Your miraculous icon and pray I love you everywhere and in every place. Lift up our prayers, like a fragrant censer, to the Throne of the Most High, who grants us health, longevity, and haste in the labors of the pious, so that we may be guided by Your care and overshadowed by Your protection, glorifying the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and Your Maternal intercession for us, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
