Hungarian Foreign Minister named the purpose of the upcoming meeting with Putin

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto said on March 4 that he had arrived in Moscow for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to obtain guarantees of uninterrupted oil and gas supplies.

"I am in Moscow to make sure that even during the crisis we will still have the oil and natural gas necessary for Hungary's energy security," Szijjarto said on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

According to the minister, the purpose of the visit is to obtain guarantees from Russian suppliers that, despite the changed circumstances and the global energy crisis, the required amount of energy resources for the country will be supplied at the same price.

A shortage of supplies can lead to a price spike of over $1,000.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on the same day that European countries had not asked Russia for energy supplies. However, he noted that Russian oil still has its buyers. At the same time, according to Peskov, Hungary and Slovakia are currently facing blackmail from Kiev, in particular with the blocking of supplies through the Druzhba oil pipeline.

On February 26, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban demanded that the EU check the condition of the Druzhba pipeline. Orban expressed the opinion that the assessment of the condition of the Druzhba pipeline could help unlock financing for Ukraine from the EU. He noted that he is aware of the political difficulties that have arisen due to the delay in issuing a loan to Ukraine in the amount of €90 billion.
