- FT has learned about the plans of the EU ambassadors to oppose the accelerated accession of Ukraine to the union
European countries do not support the idea of granting Ukraine accelerated membership in the European Union (EU), the ambassadors intend to speak out against the reform of the accession process promoted by Brussels. This was reported on March 4 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
"A merit-based approach and internal reforms remain key. All the talk about the so-called reverse entry has no chance of success. There is no support from the member states," the newspaper quoted one of the European diplomats as saying.
According to the newspaper, one of the scenarios proposed by the European Commission (EC), the so-called "reverse expansion" of the bloc, implies the accession of the Ukrainian side while meeting the minimum requirements, but with limited access to funds and decision-making mechanisms until full compliance with the requirements. However, its implementation requires a reform of the EU legislative framework, as well as endangering the European economy and causing discontent among other candidate countries, the FT clarifies.
The day before, it was reported that some EU countries oppose Ukraine's accelerated accession to the union. In particular, France and Germany expressed skepticism about the proposed reform of the Ukrainian accession process, which would shorten the country's path to EU membership.
At the same time, on February 24, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky demanded that the West set a date for the country's accession to the European Union as early as 2027.
