Russians were warned about new fraud schemes with "burning vouchers"
As spring approached, scammers began actively offering Russians "last-minute tours with incredible discounts," but they require 100% prepayment. This was announced on March 4 by the press service of the Moshelovka platform of the Popular Front.
"Scheme description: with the approach of heat, offers of "urgent" and "burning" tours are activated. Fraudsters create fake clone websites of well-known travel agencies or hack into the accounts of real travel managers on social networks," the RIA Novosti press service reported.
Potential clients are offered discounted tours to such popular countries as Egypt, Turkey and Sochi, with a 100% prepayment requirement. After receiving the money, the "travel agent" disappears, and the website or account is blocked.
People who are planning a spring break and looking for last-minute deals are particularly vulnerable. It is noted that the scheme is especially relevant in March, when Russians begin planning their spring and summer holidays.
Moshelovka advises buying tours only through the official websites of major travel agencies with a good reputation and checking the availability of the tour operator in the unified federal register. It is also important to make sure that the company has a liability insurance contract. Experts warn against prepayment to private cards.
On March 4, the Roskachestvo Digital Expertise Center reported that fraudsters were using a scheme to replace contacts on their phones, sending messages with fake offers and attaching a file with an extension.vcf, which updates the contact in the phone book when opened. According to the press service, scammers send messages via messengers or by SMS, disguising them as notifications from banks, government agencies or open vacancies.
