The final stage of a large-scale tram fleet renovation program has begun in Moscow. The capital will receive 50 modern single-section trams "Lion Cub-Moscow" with an autonomous running system, said Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

"The final delivery of 50 new Lvenok-Moscow wagons has begun, which will enter the second Moscow tram diameter T2. Autonomous trams have already proven their effectiveness and reliability. We continue to develop the tram network on behalf of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin," Liksutov said.

The new wagons will arrive at the reconstructed P.L. Apakov depot. They will replace the last remaining trams of the previous generation, as well as expand the fleet to meet the growing needs of the city. The delivery is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

The new trams are fully Russian-made and are being assembled by PC Transport Systems. As part of the contract, the capital will receive 100 wagons in 2025-2026: the first 50 entered the routes last year. Since 2017, the company has delivered more than 550 low-floor trams of the latest generation to Moscow.

Autonomous trams operate on routes T1 and 5, where the "clear sky" concept is implemented. The wagons are equipped with an autonomous running system and can pass sections without a contact network with a length of more than 4 km. Currently, two such lines have been built in the capital — along Akademika Sakharova Avenue and along Trifonovskaya Street.

The new carriages can accommodate 110 passengers and have 41 seats. The cabin has a fully low floor, climate control system, multimedia screens, connectors for charging mobile devices, as well as places for strollers and bicycles.

Moscow is a world leader in terms of the pace of renewal of the tram fleet. To date, 97% of the capital's trams have been replaced with the latest generation of railcars.
