- The political scientist assessed the prospects for resolving the conflict in the Middle East
A possible change of power in Iran will not lead to drastic changes in the situation in the Middle East. This opinion was expressed on March 3 by political scientist Alexander Asafov in a conversation with Izvestia.
According to the expert, Israel continues to be in a state of officially declared war with a number of neighboring states, and so far there are no signs of a change in this situation. Moreover, he noted that individual units of the Israeli army are being deployed towards Lebanon, which indicates that tensions remain high.
"This conflict, which has existed since the 60s, with varying degrees of intensity, subsiding and then flaring up again, in my opinion, it does not have an unambiguous solution," he said.
According to the political scientist, even a hypothetical change of power in Iran is unlikely to lead to drastic changes in the regional configuration, since the situation remains dynamic and largely unpredictable, which makes it difficult to build stable forecasts.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Iran. US President Donald Trump called it the goal of protecting the American people. Israel and the United States have carried out numerous attacks on military and civilian targets in Iran, including a school in the city of Minab. The largest Iranian cities, including Tehran, were hit. The Supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died.
In response, Iran launched Operation True Promise 4 and attacked American military bases in the Middle East, as well as Israeli cities. Tehran is attacking the Persian Gulf countries. According to the Red Crescent, at least 555 people were killed in Iran itself due to Israeli and US strikes.
