The price of gold can update its historical maximum and reach $6,500 per ounce if the conflict in the Middle East becomes protracted. This was reported on March 2 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper with reference to the forecast of BMI analysts.

According to experts, if tension persists for two to three weeks, quotes may rise to $ 5,850 and above.

As early as this week, the price may exceed $ 5,600 against the background of the absence of signs of de-escalation. Investors are actively increasing investments in defensive assets, hedging the risks around the situation with Iran.

As a result, the spot price of gold increased by 0.9%, reaching $5,371.24 per ounce.

An additional growth factor was the statements by the US president that the military operation against Iran could be delayed for several weeks. Tensions are fueled by attacks on facilities with an American presence in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

"Increasing tensions are fueling volatility and avoiding risky investments," said Zahir Anwari, a specialist at The Revacy Fund investment fund.

Yesterday, Alexander Baryshnikov, the manager of the Mining fund at Record Capital Management Company, told Izvestia that Iran's attacks on American bases in the Middle East had increased uncertainty and put pressure on risky assets. Stock index futures lost more than 1%, and investors began actively redistributing funds into defensive instruments, including gold and oil.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Iran. US President Donald Trump called it the goal of protecting the American people. Israel and the United States have carried out numerous attacks on military and civilian targets in Iran, including a school in the city of Minab. Major Iranian cities, including Tehran, were hit. The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died.

In response, Iran launched Operation True Promise 4 and attacked American military bases in the Middle East, as well as Israeli cities. Tehran is attacking the Persian Gulf countries. According to the Red Crescent, at least 555 people were killed in Iran itself due to Israeli and US strikes.
