Zelensky refused to hold elections until the conflict was over.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country will be able to hold elections only after the conflict ends. He announced this on March 3 in an interview with the newspaper Corriere della Sera.
"They (the choice. — Ed.), of course, will take place after the end of the conflict," Zelensky said.
According to him, it is allegedly impossible to hold elections during a temporary truce.
Zelensky said on February 28 that the cancellation of the elections in Ukraine is due to the fact that they are not important for the citizens of the country.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin reported on February 15 that Zelensky was discussing the election with Western partners amid a difficult domestic political situation. According to him, the Ukrainian authorities are considering various scenarios for organizing voting, including possible changes to procedures. Galuzin noted that Kiev also pays attention to the issues of citizen participation abroad and within the country.
In September last year, Zelensky said in an interview with Axios that he was ready to "not go" as a candidate for the presidential election, as this was not his goal. According to the Ukrainian leader, he is ready to hold elections in Ukraine if the conflict is resolved.
