- The Hungarian Foreign Ministry pointed out the impossibility of Ukraine's accession to the EU under Orban
Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union (EU) while Prime Minister Viktor Orban is in power in Hungary. This was announced on March 2 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.
"If we stay, we will not agree to completely insane financial support mechanisms, we will not agree to have our money taken to Ukraine. We believe that Hungarians' money should be in Hungary," the Origo portal quotes the minister as saying.
According to Szijjarto, Brussels is aware of Hungary's intentions to prevent Ukraine's membership in the EU. He noted that if the EU tries to remove the Hungarian government, it risks depriving other countries of courage and enthusiasm.
A day earlier, Szijjarto said that he had summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, and the reason for this was "forced mobilization, of which Transcarpathian Hungarians are becoming victims." He stated that the country would not tolerate the forced mobilization of ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also stated on January 28 that Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) before January 1, 2027 is impossible, since all states wishing to become EU members must meet the Copenhagen criteria.
