Every year on March 3, a special national holiday is celebrated in Russia — Oatmeal Day, dedicated to the arrival of heat. Its other names are "Yarilo with oatmeal", "Yarilo with a harrow". In 2026, the date falls on a Tuesday. Read about its history, traditions and folk signs in the Izvestia article.
Oatmeal Folk Festival – 2026: history
Oatmeal is one of the spring holidays of the national calendar, symbolizing the turn to warmth. Its origins go back to the ancient agrarian tradition of the Eastern Slavs, when life was tied to the agricultural cycle.
The name of the holiday is associated with bunting, a small bird that is widespread throughout almost the entire territory of Russia. It resembles a sparrow in size, but it has bright lemon-yellow plumage on its chest and head. In autumn, these birds fly to warmer climes, and return in early spring. It was their appearance that was a living sign of the changing season for the Slavs. When the soft melodious voice of oatmeal was heard outside the window in early March, the ancestors perceived it as confirmation that winter was receding.
Yarilo is a mythological character who personified the life forces of nature. In the popular imagination, he was not a "pantheonic" god like Perun or Veles. His image was seasonal. The word "yar" in the Old Russian language was associated with the meanings of "strong", "hot", "ardent", "spring".
Therefore, Yarilo is the spring sun that awakens the earth, melts the snow, gives rise to the growth of grass and future crops. Hence the other names of the holiday — "Yarilo with oatmeal" and "Yarilo with a harrow."
Traditions of the Oatmeal folk festival on March 3
After the adoption of Christianity, Oatmeal Day was preserved in the national calendar as an early spring "economic landmark." In the villages, the holiday was perceived as a time of preparation for field work — there is plowing ahead, it is necessary to prepare seeds, check the tools that will be needed for future sowing, and bring cattle to pastures.
Therefore, the men inspected ploughs, harrows, carts, repaired, ordered missing parts from blacksmiths and carpenters. Although the struggle itself began later, it was now that the household had to be put in order.
The women were cleaning the house, sorting through old things, freeing up space for the new season. A special place was occupied by baking "oatmeal cookies" — cookies made from oatmeal and wheat flour with the addition of milk, butter, sugar and starch. The dough was rolled out, and figures in the shape of the sun and birds were cut out of it. The circle symbolized the sun, and the birds symbolized the return of warmth and prosperity.
Cookies were served to relatives, neighbors, and even the buntings themselves. It was considered a good sign if the bird pecked the crumbs. This meant that spring was finally coming into its own and the year would be satisfying.
According to beliefs, spring should be greeted with joy, so young people arranged gatherings and festivities on this day. The boys and girls used this opportunity to get to know each other, to look out for the future groom or bride.
What not to do on the feast of Oatmeal
In the folk tradition, March 3 was accompanied by a number of restrictions, the violation of which, according to beliefs, could deprive a person of prosperity and success in business. On the Day of oatmeal, it was forbidden to do nothing. The ancestors believed that passivity at the moment of the awakening of nature can "freeze" luck for the whole year.
What else you can't do on March 3rd:
- Being sad promises prolonged failure and exhaustion.;
- Staying alone is a day designed for communication and shared joy.;
- Wearing dark—colored clothes runs the risk of scaring off the spring warmth and luck.;
- giving or asking for salt: such a "favor" is a bad omen associated with tears and losses;
- catching buntings can delay the arrival of spring and disrupt the harmony of nature.
Folk signs for March 3
On March 3, farmers closely observed natural phenomena, trying to determine what to expect from the spring season, whether the year would be fruitful.
- Thunder is thundering — to a rich harvest;
- puddles are spreading along the roads — the first greenery will soon appear.;
- trees crackle in the forest – to increase frosts;
- a lot of unfrozen snow — for a fertile year;

Earlier, Izvestia was told about the signs and strict prohibitions of a special holiday by Fyodor Tyron and Mariamna Kikimora.
