FIDE excluded Karjakin from the rating two days after his return.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) excluded grandmaster Sergey Karjakin from the rating just two days after his return. This is evidenced by the data on the FIDE website.
Karjakin was included in the rating on February 28, he took 10th place with 2,750 points, before that he had not appeared on the list since 2024. But two days later, his name disappeared from the table.
According to the rules of the Chess Federation, an athlete is excluded from the ranking if he does not participate in time-controlled tournaments for a year. In February 2026, Karjakin played a match with Mikhail Markov at the Russian Chess Crown Festival, and also participated in the Sports Contest among the authorities.
Koryakin was excluded from the rating in 2023, but soon returned to the 12th position. In July 2024, the athlete was again excluded from the list.
Soviet and American grandmaster Lev Alburt said in January this year that the protests organized by Western chess federations against Russian athletes and directed against their participation in international tournaments with national symbols are senseless "petty dirty tricks."
On December 14, 2025, FIDE decided to allow chess players from Russia to participate in competitions with national symbols. Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of Russia, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Chess Federation (FSHR), said on the same day that Russia welcomes this decision, which represents the "most correct step" in the issue of depoliticization of sports.
