On March 6, the Orpheus video platform will show a recording of the opera by the Soviet composer Rodion Shchedrin "Not Only Love" staged by the Moscow Academic Musical Theater named after K.S. Stanislavsky and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko (MAMT). This was announced on March 2 by the press service of MAMTa.
"It is a great honor for us to present Rodion Shchedrin's opera Not Only Love on the Orpheus video platform, performed by the renowned troupe of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Musical Theater. <...> This is a story about the most intimate things — about love, choice, and strength of spirit, told in a language understandable to each of us. Russian music," said Irina Gerasimova, General Director and Artistic Director of the Orpheus Television and Radio Center.
The premiere of the production at MAMTa took place on March 6, 2024. She was highly appreciated by Shchedrin himself. In 2025, the play won the Golden Mask National Theater Award in the nominations "Best Performance in an Opera" and "Best Director's Work", and also received the Onegin National Opera Award.
The general director of the theater, Andrey Borisov, emphasized that the opera contains a "timeless Russian code" and dedicated the broadcast to Shchedrin's memory.
"In difficult and even turning points in the history of our Motherland, we always turn to our roots. It helps to stay alive, survive and become stronger. The opera, based on folklore motifs and Russian ditties, evokes hope, the search for love and happiness," he explained.
Conductor Felix Korobov called the composition one of the landmark operas of the twentieth century and recalled the words of its author, who hoped that his work would have a happy life in this theater.
The opera "Not only Love" was written by Shchedrin in 1961 based on stories by Sergei Antonov. The action takes place 10 years after the Great Patriotic War. In the center of the plot is the chairman of the collective farm, Varvara Vasilyevna, who is faced with a choice between personal feelings and duty. The main roles are performed by Larisa Andreeva, Kirill Matveev, Maria Makeeva, Felix Kudryavtsev.
It will be possible to see the performance on the MAMTA stage on April 24.
On the same day, the MAMTa press service announced that the theater would present Dmitry Shostakovich's opera "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" in its first edition. The performance is dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the composer's birth. The premiere screenings will take place on March 20, 21 and 22.
