The expert assessed the impact of tensions around Iran on China's economy
The aggravation of the situation around Iran and fluctuations in oil prices are becoming a significant external factor for the Chinese economy. Andrey Kogan, the founder of the All-China company and chairman of the Committee for Work with China of the Association of Exporters and Importers, told Izvestia on March 2.
"For Beijing, this is primarily a matter of energy sustainability: the country remains the largest importer of oil, so any increase in the price of raw materials affects the costs of industry, logistics and domestic demand. However, China has long taken such risks into account in its strategy — it is diversifying suppliers, building up strategic reserves and actively investing in alternative energy," the expert noted.
According to him, rising oil prices can temporarily increase inflationary pressures and reduce exporters' margins, especially in energy-intensive industries. At the same time, this situation is stimulating the acceleration of structural restructuring of the economy, including improving energy efficiency, expanding payments in national currencies and strengthening technological autonomy.
Kogan stressed that Beijing has consistently reduced its dependence on external shocks in recent years through the development of the domestic market and support for high-tech industries. Therefore, short-term fluctuations in commodity markets are not a critical factor for an economy of this scale.
"China has significant financial resources, a guided monetary policy and flexible industrial support tools. Therefore, the impact of the conflict over Iran and rising oil prices is more likely to be a corrective element of the development trajectory than a turning point," Kogan stressed.
The expert believes that in the medium term, the current situation may even strengthen China's strategic course towards energy diversification and technological leadership without changing its fundamental positions in the global economy.
