Umar Alievich Dzhabrailov is a Russian entrepreneur, statesman and philanthropist of Chechen origin, known for his participation in major business projects of the 1990s and 2000s, as well as his work in the highest authorities.

Family and education

Umar Dzhabrailov was born on June 28, 1958 in Grozny. He is a Chechen by nationality. His father, Ali (Alvi) Dzhabrailov, who was exiled to Kazakhstan during the years of deportation, after returning to Chechnya worked in the oil industry and served as secretary of the Komsomol district committee. Mother is Rumi Sarakayeva. Three brothers and two sisters grew up in the family.

The future entrepreneur spent his childhood in the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In the early 1970s, he moved to Moscow, where he continued his studies. In 1973-1977, Dzhabrailov studied at the Rospotrebsoyuz Fur College in the capital. After graduating from college, he served in the strategic missile Forces in the city of Korosten. During this period, he joined the CPSU.

He graduated from MGIMO University with honors in 1985. He got a free assignment and worked as a laboratory assistant for several years. In 2009, he defended his PhD thesis at the Russian Academy of Public Administration on the development of an effective state in the system of international relations and received a PhD in Political Science.

He was a full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. According to media reports, Dzhabrailov was fluent in English, German and Italian, understood French, Spanish, Czech and Hungarian.

Entrepreneurial activity

In the late 1980s, Dzhabrailov became a representative of a number of foreign companies in the capital. In December 1992, he founded the Danako company, which operated a network of gas stations in Moscow and the Moscow Region and had contracts for the supply of petroleum products to state-owned enterprises.

In 1994, he began working with American businessman Paul Tatum, who headed the Intourist-RedAmer company. Dzhabrailov assumed the post of First Deputy General Director and participated in the management of the Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel. In 1996, Tatum was killed, but Dzhabrailov's involvement in the crime was not established. At the same time, he was denied entry to the United States.

In the late 1990s, the businessman became one of the leaders of the Plaza Group of companies, which managed large real estate facilities, including the Okhotny Ryad and Smolensky Passage shopping malls, as well as hotel and residential complexes in Moscow. His name was regularly mentioned in the business press as one of the notable entrepreneurs of the 1990s era.

Political career

In 2000, Dzhabrailov participated in the Russian presidential election, running as an independent candidate. He received 0.1% of the votes.

From January 2004 to October 2009, he represented the executive branch of the Chechen Republic in the Federation Council. He worked in the Committees on International Affairs and Economic Policy, Entrepreneurship and property, and served as Deputy Chairman of the relevant committee. He was a member of the Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

After leaving the Federation Council, he became an adviser to the assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Sergey Prikhodko. He was awarded the Kadyrov Order and a Certificate of Honor from the Federation Council. Until 2017, he was a member of the United Russia party, but was expelled after the court decision on hooliganism related to the incident at the Four Seasons Hotel in Moscow came into force.

Patronage and personal life

Throughout his life, Dzhabrailov was interested in art, fashion and design. He collected works of art, including works by contemporary Russian authors. In recent years, he has been actively involved in cultural projects. In particular, he headed the Board of Trustees of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, was an honorary academician of the Russian Academy of Arts and Vice President of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia for strategic projects.

Dzhabrailov had two daughters from his first marriage, Danata and Alvina, who now live with their mother in Monte Carlo. Over the years, the media attributed to him relationships with foreign and Russian celebrities, including affairs with Sharon Stone, Ornella Muti, Ksenia Sobchak, Naomi Campbell. The entrepreneur himself has not publicly commented on such information.

Causes of death

In early March 2026, Umar Dzhabrailov was found dead in Moscow. According to the source of Izvestia, he was found on the territory of the Vesper residential complex. The politician and businessman was taken to the hospital, where he later died. There were weapons nearby. It was reported that he had previously attempted suicide.
