The IT specialist warned about the danger of changing the phone number
Changing the mobile phone number may endanger the user's security. Artem Aksyanov, Director of the Web Development Department at Synergy University, told the Prime agency about this on March 2.
"Telecom operators work in conditions of limited resources. The numbers go into circulation, come back, go through the so—called "quarantine" — usually for up to six months — and arrive again to new subscribers," he said.
Today, a phone number is the key to accessing banking applications, personal accounts, work systems, and government services, the expert emphasized. When the owner changes, there is no disconnection between the number and the old subscriber. As the agency's interlocutor explained, as a result, a new user can request password recovery for accounts.
According to the expert, when receiving a number that previously belonged to another person, active actions of intruders are possible. In order to minimize risks, it is recommended to update the phone number in a timely manner in all services used by the subscriber, and enable two-factor identity authentication.
On February 28, the press service of the Russian Red Cross (RCC) reported that fraudsters, posing as employees of the RCC, were trying to deceive relatives of missing servicemen, allegedly offering help in the search. They promise to provide information about the fate of the missing or send links to "closed databases" with information about prisoners of war. The main purpose of scammers is to force the victim to click on a link or install third-party files, as well as convince them to transfer money.
