The assassination of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could trigger religious conflicts in the Middle East. This was announced on March 1 by Esmail Bagai, a representative of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could trigger a religious war, and the region could witness many religious conflicts," he said.

In addition, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that his state does not conflict with its neighbors, and also respects the principles of good neighborliness.

The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported on March 1. Iran's supreme leader was killed during US-Israeli strikes early on Saturday morning, February 28, while performing work duties at his residence. On March 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian in connection with the murder of Khamenei.

The chairman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, on the same day called the assassination of the supreme leader an encroachment on the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic.
