- Russian tourists in Dubai described the situation at the time of the start of the Iranian strikes
Tourists on vacation in Dubai, at the time of the first Iranian strikes, did not even realize at first that the air defense system had been activated. Eyewitnesses of the events shared their impressions with Izvestia on March 1.
According to eyewitnesses, the first strike caught them on the beach in the Madinat Jumeirah area, but the vacationers took the work of the air defense system simply for an unusual trace in the sky. There was no panic among the people — they continued to go about their business.
"In the area of Madinat Jumeirah, some clapping was heard in different parts of the city for several hours. We saw in the news that they were evacuating [people] there," one of the tourists said.
A few hours later, clapping was heard in different parts of the city. Authorities began evacuating high-rise buildings, including the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, but in the center, according to tourists, everything remained relatively calm.
In the evening, the travelers witnessed the work of the air defense system themselves — during a taxi ride from Creek Harbor to Business Bay, they saw a drone shot down right in front of them.
A tourist named Aldina told Izvestia about the situation in Dubai on the second day of the Iranian attacks. According to her, the air defense system is still operating in the city. According to the girl, they were placed in a conference room at the hotel instead of the usual rooms. There is no shortage of food in grocery stores — they are filled with groceries.
"The most careful attitude was. People behaved calmly," she said.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Iran. US President Donald Trump called it the goal of "protecting the American people." Israel and the United States have carried out numerous attacks on military and civilian targets in Iran, including a school in the city of Minab.
Later, on March 1, it became known that the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed as a result of Israeli attacks. The Iranian government has declared national mourning. An interim governing council has been established in the country. Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian has vowed to avenge Khamenei's death. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences over the death of the Iranian leader and condemned the assassination.
