Medvedev called Khamenei's murder an unjustifiable barbaric act.
The assassination of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was committed in violation of all norms and principles of international law, Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on March 1.
"There is and cannot be any justification for this barbaric act of force. A cynical atrocity was committed in violation of all norms and principles of international law, including those enshrined in the UN Charter," RIA Novosti quoted Medvedev as saying.
Medvedev sent a telegram of condolences to Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian in connection with Khamenei's murder.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on the same day that the news of the death of the supreme leader of Iran and other Iranian leaders as a result of strikes by the United States and Israel causes outrage and deep regret in Moscow. The ministry stressed that the military operation of the United States and Israel contradicts international law and the principle of relations between the countries.
The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported earlier on March 1. The Supreme leader of Iran was assassinated early on Saturday morning, February 28, while performing work duties at his residence. Against this background, rallies began in the country. The Iranian government has declared mourning.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, in a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, declared Iran's readiness for self-defense after the assassination of Khamenei. The Turkish minister, in turn, expressed his condolences over the death of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
