The outbreak of the second stage of the conflict between the United States, Israel and their allies against Iran is unlikely to result in a long-term operation. On February 28, Lieutenant Colonel Roman Shkurlatov, Chairman of the Board of the All-Russian organization Officers of Russia, told Izvestia.

"It won't come to large-scale land operations. A powerful army group on the border with Iran would have been noticed by intelligence means, but this did not happen, which means that the United States does not have it. Geography, geopolitical considerations and many other factors will not allow the United States to launch a full—scale operation," said Shkurlatov.

The expert suggested that without a ground operation in Iran, the Americans would not be able to achieve their goals of changing the government in the country. In addition, the morale of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) and the country's armed forces is quite high there.

"Iran is a big state with a good, strong military—industrial complex, with its own missile program. The United States and Israel will exhaust and bleed the country gradually, moving with small steps towards their goal. The main target will be Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Iran will respond by snapping and retaliating, but it should not reach a full—scale war," Shkurlatov said.

Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iran on the morning of February 28. The Reuters news agency said Iran was preparing to retaliate after the strikes on Tehran. American leader Donald Trump announced the start of a US military operation against Iran.

Later, Iran fired rockets towards Israel. The US Fifth Fleet maintenance center was shelled in Bahrain. In addition, Iran attacked four US military bases in Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Against this background, the United States began evacuating some personnel from the Al-Udeid airbase in Qatar.

At the same time, the IDF launched a massive airstrike on military installations in western Iran. The city of Shiraz was attacked. In addition, 70,000 Israeli reservists were called up for military service. It was clarified that the commander-in-chief of the Iranian army, Amir Hatami, was killed in the attack.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that Russia demands that the situation around Iran be immediately brought back to a political and diplomatic settlement. The Foreign Ministry pointed out that the fact that the attacks are being carried out again under the guise of the resumed negotiation process deserves condemnation.
