- The media reported on the freezing of the US arms deal in Taiwan due to Trump's visit to China
The White House has temporarily frozen a $13 billion arms supply deal for Taiwan to avoid possible displeasure from Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of US President Donald Trump's April visit to China. This was reported on February 27 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.
"The sale of weapons, including air defense missiles, is at an advanced stage. Senior Republican and Democratic lawmakers approved the package after the State Department sent it to them in January for informal review," the publication says.
In January, the U.S. State Department notified Congress of the planned shipments, and lawmakers from both parties supported the initiative. However, the deal was subsequently halted.
According to the NYT, the White House has instructed not to take further steps to implement the contract, so as not to complicate the preparation of the US-China meeting.
U.S. Trade negotiator Jamison Greer announced on February 12 that the United States had signed a final trade agreement with Taiwan. This agreement will strengthen trade relations between the two countries and enhance the sustainability of supply chains, particularly in high-tech sectors.
