- A new scheme of scammers with calls to relatives of missing military personnel has become known.
Fraudsters, posing as employees of the Russian Red Cross (RKK), are trying to deceive relatives of missing servicemen, allegedly offering help in the search. This was announced on February 28 by the press service of the organization.
According to the press service, intruders often contact relatives of military personnel, offering help in the search through their channels. They promise to provide information about the fate of the missing or send links to "closed databases" with information about prisoners of war. The main purpose of scammers is to force the victim to click on a link or install third-party files, as well as convince them to transfer money.
The Russian Red Cross stressed that the organization never contacts people through unofficial accounts, random personal messages or social networks. All interactions take place through official, verified communication channels, which are listed on the official website, and communication is carried out only from the official phone number.
The organization also noted that the Russian Red Cross does not offer paid services, does not ask to install third-party applications, does not raise money to help the military, and does not include relatives in exchange lists.
"If a person receives such messages on behalf of the Red Cross, it is a scam. In such cases, it is important not to enter into correspondence, not to transfer personal data, and to verify information only through the official resources of the organization," the RSC said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
On February 24, the Interior Ministry warned that fraudsters were calling relatives of participants in a special military operation (SVO) under the guise of commanders or colleagues, reporting injuries and awards, and then forcing them to transfer money or give a text message code. The attackers also create chat rooms in messengers for those who have lost contact with the fighters. They send out virus files under the guise of "prisoner of war lists" or "photo albums."
