NASA announced the landing of astronauts on the Moon in 2028
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced a review of the timing of the Artemis lunar program: the landing of American astronauts on the lunar surface is planned in 2028. This was announced on February 27 by the NASA press service.
"NASA must standardize its approach, improve flight safety, and follow the president's national space policy. Given that competition from our largest geopolitical opponent is growing every day, we need to act faster, eliminate delays and achieve our goals," the press service quoted NASA CEO Jared Isaacman as saying.
The program includes an additional mission in 2027. It involves space tests of the rendezvous and docking of the manned Orion with commercial lunar modules of SpaceX and Blue Origin, a comprehensive check of life support systems, communications and propulsion systems, as well as testing new spacesuits for extravehicular activities.
According to NASA, the Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2027, will focus on testing systems and operational capabilities in low-Earth orbit in preparation for the Artemis IV landing in 2028.
Initially, within the framework of Artemis III, astronauts were supposed to land directly on the Moon in 2027, but later the plans were adjusted.
CBS reported that NASA sent the Artemis II rocket for repair on February 26. This was due to the problems of gel pressure in the upper stage. Engineers will also replace the batteries of the self-destruct system. The update will also affect the overclocking unit. Due to problems, the launch was postponed until at least April 1. Similar problems with the helium system have already occurred during the Artemis I mission. The upcoming launch will be the first manned flight to the Moon since 1972.
