- The State Traffic Inspectorate announced mass inspections of drivers over the coming weekend
On Friday evening, as well as on weekends (February 27 – March 1), massive and continuous checks of motorists will take place on Russian roads. The police will pay special attention to the prevention of drunk driving and the identification of drivers in a state of intoxication. The regional departments of the State Traffic Inspectorate announced the preventive raids.
Preventive measures will be carried out on the roads of the Tver, Ivanovo, Ulyanovsk, Magadan, Kaluga regions and in other regions of the country.
"We remind you about the inadmissibility of driving under the influence of alcohol. This is one of the grossest traffic violations, which leads to the most serious, tragic consequences. Drivers who allow themselves to get behind the wheel after drinking alcoholic beverages are showing the height of recklessness, thereby putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at great risk. We kindly ask motorists to refrain from traveling after the feast by using public transport or a taxi," said Police Colonel Anton Belan, Deputy head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child Traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The State Traffic Inspectorate also urges citizens who see that a person with signs of intoxication gets behind the wheel of a car or the driver behaves inappropriately on the road, be sure to report this to the police. According to such reports, the traffic police will immediately take all necessary response measures, the department said.
Driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as refusing a medical examination, entail the deprivation of a driver's license for a period of one and a half to two years and a heavy fine. In addition, in some cases, the driver faces criminal liability for these acts, the Traffic Police remind.
Earlier, on February 16, it was reported that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation has developed a draft government decree, which proposes to conduct preliminary drug testing of the driver by saliva. Based on its results, the issue of the driver's removal from control and the further procedure for his examination for intoxication will be resolved.
