The expert linked the deployment of nuclear weapons in Sweden with the deepening of participation in NATO

Alexander Ermakov, a researcher at the IMEMO RAS Center for International Security, said that the deployment of nuclear weapons in Sweden is a development of the country's participation in NATO.

Thus, in an interview with News Mail on Friday, February 27, the expert commented on the statement by the head of the Swedish Ministry of Defense, Pal Johnson, about the possible deployment of nuclear arsenals in the country.

Ermakov drew attention to the fact that the statement by the Swedish Minister of Defense mentions the possibility of deploying everything necessary to ensure security in wartime. According to him, this is a direct continuation of Sweden's participation in NATO, involving the transfer of American nuclear weapons by the allies and their deployment on the territory of the bloc during the war.

The expert noted that, first of all, we can talk about American aerial bombs, but the development of European cooperation in the nuclear field is also possible. He added that the maximum of such integration could be the deployment of French forces at Swedish airfields in wartime, since French aviation nuclear cruise missiles can only be used from French fighter jets.

Ermakov also recalled that in peacetime, Sweden has a ban on the deployment of foreign nuclear weapons, so without serious political changes, the appearance of nuclear forces in the country is unlikely.

Earlier in the day, Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson said that Sweden could consider deploying nuclear weapons on its territory in the event of martial law. Since 2023, before Sweden joined NATO, the parties have agreed that there should be no nuclear weapons on the territory of the state in peacetime.
