Ex-rector of BFU was sentenced to five years in a penal colony in a case of embezzlement

In Kaliningrad, the Leningradsky District Court sentenced Alexander Fedorov, former rector of the Baltic Federal University (BFU), to five years in a penal colony in a case of embezzlement, the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee (IC) for the Moscow Region reported on February 27.

"From December 2019 to July 2024, the defendants organized an illegal incentive payment scheme for university staff. The prizes were awarded by the defendants and spent on personal needs. 20 university employees were involved in the criminal scheme," the MAX department said in a statement.

Fedorov is charged with Part 4 of Article 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Embezzlement of funds on an especially large scale"). The amount of damage to the university after his actions amounted to 35.1 million rubles. His deputy, Elena Myalkina, was also sentenced. She received three years in prison. The convicts will serve their sentences in a general regime penal colony.

In July 2024, the BFU informed Izvestia about Fedorov's detention. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation stated that the former rector and his deputy Elena Myalkina are suspected of embezzling more than 18 million rubles. On the same day, investigative measures were carried out in the rector's office. It was reported that during the searches, almost 700 thousand rubles in cash were found.

At the same time, the court arrested Fedorov and Myalkina for two months. The investigators found that Myalkina issued baseless memos, and Fedorov issued orders on the basis of which bonuses were paid to employees. After that, the employees transferred the money to Fedorov through a deputy. They were charged. After Fedorov's arrest, Maxim Demin, Vice-rector for Research, was appointed interim head of the BFU.
