Scientists have conducted a number of large-scale expeditions to study the polar bear population in Taimyr and the Kara Sea in 2024-2025. For the first time, experts have installed satellite tags on males and performed a complete aerial survey of the Kara predator subpopulation. Rosneft, which has been organizing Arctic expeditions to study the owner of the Arctic since 2014, told about the results of research for the International Polar Bear Day.

In particular, during the aerial survey, about 170,000 ordinary photographs and 540,000 infrared images were obtained. Currently, the materials are being processed using artificial intelligence, the company said. The results will help clarify data on migration routes, the physical condition of animals and develop measures for their conservation.

The 2025 flight survey was a continuation of the expedition conducted a year earlier. In 2024, scientists recorded 50 polar bears during the ice-free period on the northwestern coast of Taimyr and the islands of the Kara Sea. At the same time, for the first time in Russian practice, satellite radio tags were installed on males to monitor seasonal migration and study ancestral dens.

The company has been conducting polar bear research together with scientists since 2014, during which time 10 scientific expeditions have been organized. In 2024, a new four-year research cycle was launched. A total of 36 polar bears were tagged with sensors during the Rosneft expeditions.

Conservation of the polar bear population is an important area of Rosneft's environmental program, the company stressed. Since 2013, Rosneft has been patronizing all polar bears in Russian zoos (36 animals). In 2025, ice generators, an X-ray detector and veterinary equipment were purchased for zoos, and aviaries in four zoos were repaired. In addition, in 2025, Rosneft, together with Innopraktika, launched the online course "Arctic Wanderer: the Polar Bear" on the Lectorium platform.
