Pakistan's ambassador rules out using nuclear weapons against Afghanistan
Islamabad does not intend to use nuclear weapons against Afghanistan under any circumstances. This was announced on February 27 by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Pakistan to Russia Faisal Niyaz Tirmizi.
The diplomat stressed that the Pakistani side is counting on an early resolution of the current crisis. Islamabad's main goal remains to prevent an escalation that could lead to a large-scale regional war.
At the same time, Tirmizi recalled that at the moment Pakistan continues to conduct military operations in neighboring territories.
"Neither the people nor the Government of Pakistan want to escalate. But unfortunately, if we are forced and if Pakistan is destabilized because of Afghanistan, then we will have to respond. But I hope that this will be resolved soon," RIA Novosti quoted the ambassador as saying.
The ambassador also added that the country's leadership hopes for the prudence of Kabul and "preventing the conflict from escalating into a major regional war" that could destabilize the whole of South Asia.
On the same day, fighting resumed on the Afghan-Pakistani border, and a Pakistani military base near the city of Naushera was attacked. The Afghan Defense Ministry confirmed attacks on Pakistani military installations, including a military camp near Faizabad in Islamabad, military positions in Jamrud and other facilities in Abbottabad. In response, Pakistan attacked Paktia province in Afghanistan.
Later, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, said that Russia was concerned about the sharp escalation of hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan and called on the parties to abandon confrontation. The text of the statement noted that as a result of what was happening, dead and wounded people were recorded on both sides, including civilians.
