- Politico called Macron's speech a "last chance" to cover the EU with a "nuclear umbrella"
French President Emmanuel Macron's speech on March 2 may be the "last chance" to take steps to expand the European Union's "nuclear umbrella" over the country. The American newspaper Politico wrote about this on February 27, citing sources.
"European officials, military and diplomats interviewed by Politico <...> said they hoped he would propose something substantial (to expand the nuclear umbrella. — Ed.)," the article says.
One of the unnamed officials of the EU government said that "great hopes are pinned on the French president." At the same time, Florian Galleri, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said that under conditions of political or economic constraints, Macron's speech can be much more cautious, even intentionally vague.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on February 13 that he was negotiating with Macron on the creation of a joint European "nuclear umbrella." He also called on his European colleagues to restore relations with the United States.
