The dermatologist spoke about the effect of low-quality jewelry on the skin
Low-quality jewelry can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations, especially if it contains alloys such as nickel, cobalt or chromium. On February 27, a dermatologist, cosmetologist, and co-owner of a network of clinics, Dr. Zarema Omarova, told Izvestia about this.
According to the expert, allergic reactions are most often caused not by "pure" metals, but by alloys that are used in the manufacture of jewelry to increase strength and reduce cost. The most significant allergen is nickel, whose ions can penetrate into the upper layers of the skin and cause inflammation. In this regard, as Omarova noted, nickel remains one of the most common causes of contact allergic dermatitis.
In addition, the alloys may contain cobalt, which is often allergic to, especially if it is combined with hypersensitivity to nickel. Chromium can also cause a reaction, especially in its hexavalent form, the dermatologist said.
"Constant wearing of low—quality jewelry increases the risk of allergic contact dermatitis, which is manifested by redness, itching, swelling, peeling and the appearance of fluid bubbles, with chronic contact, the skin can thicken, crack, painful erosions form," said Omarova.
In addition to allergic dermatitis, there is also irritating contact dermatitis caused by friction, sweat, and micro-damage to the skin. Cheap soft metals deform faster, injuring the skin, which increases the risk of infections.
"If symptoms appear, it is necessary first of all to stop contact with the jewelry. If the reaction is mild, local anti—inflammatory drugs and restoration of the skin barrier using emollients and moisturizers with panthenol or ceramides are sufficient," the doctor noted.
As the specialist noted, with more pronounced inflammation, external glucocorticosteroids may be needed for a short course (5-7 days), but only on the recommendation of a doctor, since prolonged use can lead to side effects such as thinning of the skin. Antihistamines help to reduce itching, but they do not affect the mechanism of dermatitis. If an infection develops, such as pain, purulent discharge, or increased redness, you should consult a doctor.
"For prevention, it is recommended to remove jewelry at night and during sports, not to wear products with a damaged coating, avoid jewelry contact with wet skin and regularly clean them of dirt; if you are prone to allergies, preference should be given to hypoallergenic materials such as medical steel, titanium or high—grade gold," concluded Omarova.
Allergologist-immunologist, rheumatologist, general practitioner of the NCC Nº2 Federal State Budgetary Budgetary Institution "RNC named after Academician B.V. Petrovsky" Elena Sycheva said on February 20 that the use of fake perfumes can lead to poisoning, skin diseases and allergic reactions due to the content of toxic substances. The allergist recommended buying perfumes only at official outlets, paying attention to the composition and avoiding products of questionable origin.
