Compliments have a noticeable effect on a person's mental and emotional state and can reduce stress levels. Irina Krashkina, a psychotherapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), Candidate of Medical Sciences, told Izvestia about this on March 1.

According to her, a compliment is not just a polite phrase about appearance, but a signal of recognition and importance.

"When a person hears sincere words of support, the brain triggers reactions related to feelings of pleasure, security, and belonging to a group. Dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin are involved in this process — the same neurotransmitters that are activated during pleasant communication and a sense of success," the specialist explained.

The specialist noted that regular positive interactions help reduce overall anxiety levels, improve sleep, and maintain healthy habits. At the same time, a lack of recognition and warm communication increases feelings of loneliness and may increase the risks of depression, cardiovascular disease, and weakened immune systems.

Words of support are especially important for people going through difficult periods — chronic illness, rehabilitation, job loss or relocation. According to the therapist, a sincere compliment from a doctor, colleague, or loved one can become part of a therapeutic space in which a person feels important.

The expert emphasized that compliments should be realistic and diverse — they should relate not only to appearance, but also to efforts, professional achievements, patience or courage. This approach helps to create a stable sense of self-worth. According to Krashkina, a few sincere kind words are not a substitute for treatment, but they can become an important element of psychological support and help a person cope with a difficult day more easily.

In January, Krashkina told Izvestia about the benefits of hugs for mental health. Warm and prolonged physical contact promotes the production of oxytocin, a hormone of attachment that enhances a sense of security and trust, as well as reduces the level of cortisol responsible for stress.
