Rodnina explained her return from the USA to Russia
Irina Rodnina, a Soviet figure skater, three-time Olympic champion in pair skating (1972, 1976, 1980) and a State Duma deputy, said on February 26 that she had returned from the United States because Russia was her home.
"I understood why and why I was returning, why I was stopping working where, as it seemed to everyone, everything was fine. I returned from the USA because Russia is my country, my home," the figure skater said in an interview with Sport24.
According to Rodnina, leaving the state in 1990 was not her decision. Then she left the Russian Federation due to obligations under a contract concluded with government agencies of the USSR, since such proposals were rare.
She added that many people did not understand her return to her homeland, and also felt envy. However, Rodnina clarified that this decision was well thought out, and not a "passing whim."
In December last year, Rodnina stated that she had never been interested in obtaining American citizenship. The MP stressed that she has always been a Russian citizen and considers it important to represent her Homeland at the international level.
