Forecaster predicted an active spring flood in Moscow
An active flood is expected in Moscow in the spring, which will be caused by the melting of record amounts of snow. Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos Weather center, told about this on February 26.
"Considering the unprecedented height of the snow cover, the area of the capital and the autumn waterlogging of the land, <...> it can be assumed that such a huge amount of snow — translated into water — corresponds to about 5 million cubic meters — this is how much water Moscow will take in during the upcoming snowmelt in moderate March," he said in a message on the Telegram channel.
The meteorologist compared this figure with the height of a 50-storey skyscraper completely filled with water, with an area of 2 thousand Olympic pools.
According to forecasts, the snow will start melting on February 27. Precipitation is expected to decrease in 60% of cases by April 5, and in 40% by April 10.
Tishkovets added that a similar situation can be observed in the regions adjacent to the capital. He announced a possible "awakening of reservoirs" in this area and urged Russians to be prepared for flooding.
Yuri Varakin, adviser to the director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, said a day earlier that heavy precipitation was not expected in Moscow and its region at the end of February. However, as he stressed, heavy ice conditions will be maintained. After February 28, as predicted by the expert, an Atlantic cyclone with sleet and rain will arrive in the capital region. The temperature in Moscow will rise to +3 degrees, in the region it will range from -1 to +4 degrees, and the south-westerly wind will increase.
