The Supreme Court of Russia has approved a life sentence against the head of Russia's largest criminal group, Aslan Gagiev, nicknamed Jacko. This was reported on February 26 by a correspondent of Izvestia from the courtroom.

Gagiev was convicted under articles on the organization of a criminal community, the murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group and associated with banditry, the creation of three stable armed groups (gangs), as well as the illegal trafficking of weapons and ammunition.

The defendant's lawyer asked the court to change the sentence from life imprisonment to 24 years in a penal colony.

According to the investigation, in 2004 Gagiev organized a criminal group that operated in Moscow, the Moscow region and North Ossetia. There were at least 50 participants. Then, no later than November 2012, Gagiev created three gangs in North Ossetia, which became units of his criminal community.

From 2012 to 2013, six people were killed in the republic on Gagiev's instructions, including Oleg Oziev, Deputy prosecutor of the Industrial District of Vladikavkaz. In 2015, Gagiev was detained in Austria and only extradited to Moscow in 2018. In the 10 years since the creation of the criminal group, its members have committed numerous murders, attempted murders and assaults on the lives of law enforcement officers, resulting in the deaths of 60 people.

In September 2023, Gagiev was sentenced to life in prison. At the same time, the defendant stated during his testimony that he had nothing to do with contract killings and did not consider himself guilty. In addition, 12 members of his gang received sentences ranging from 12 years to life in prison on charges of dozens of murders.

In April 2025, the Military Court of Appeal released Gagiev from punishment for illegal arms trafficking, but the criminal boss' life sentence remained in force.
