The doctor spoke about the factors affecting men's reproductive health.
After 35 years of age, the quality of the biological fluid released by the male body during ejaculation may decrease due to bad habits, excess weight and stress. On March 1, Mzia Leviashvili, an obstetrician-gynecologist and doctor at the Clinic of Reproductive Medicine +1, told Izvestia.
Despite the widespread myth about men's ability to conceive at any age, modern research shows that after the age of 35, men's sperm concentration and motility decrease, as well as the number of abnormal forms increases. The main problem, according to Leviashvili, is the accumulation of sperm DNA damage, which can cause difficulties with conception and habitual miscarriage.
As the doctor emphasized, age is just a marker behind which there is a man's lifestyle. Chronic diseases, smoking, excess weight, alcohol and stress — all these factors affect the reproductive system.
"We often talk about age, but there is always a specific baggage behind it: whether a man smokes, whether he is overweight, how often he drinks alcohol, how stress-resistant he is. Smoking and alcohol have a toxic effect on spermatogenesis. Physical inactivity and excess weight lead to hormonal imbalance. Chronic stress destroys reproductive potential at the cellular level," Leviashvili said.
Preparing for conception is not a short—term task. Leviashvili advises men to take a systematic approach to training: normalize nutrition, engage in regular physical activity, control stress, and get enough rest.
If lifestyle adjustments do not bring results, and the changes are irreversible, assisted reproductive technologies come to the rescue. Modern techniques make it possible to select a high-quality sperm and successfully fertilize an egg, even in the case of severe forms of infertility, she noted.
"The optimal time for having children from a biological point of view is before the age of 35, and this applies to both partners. At this age, the risks are minimal and the body's resources are maximized. But if the time is lost, do not despair. The path to parenthood in adulthood may be more difficult, but it is possible. The main thing is that the couple should go through it together, consciously and in cooperation with the doctor. Reproductive health is the responsibility of two people," concluded the specialist.
Artur Bogatyrev, a urologist and andrologist at the SM Clinic Center for Reproductive Health, said on February 18 that the full functioning of the male reproductive system largely depends on sufficient intake of vitamins and trace elements. So, first of all, the specialist identified vitamin C. According to him, it is a strong antioxidant that protects cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.
