Orban demanded Zelensky to resume the work of the Druzhba oil pipeline
On February 26, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban published a letter to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky demanding that the Druzhba oil pipeline be reopened.
"I urge you to immediately resume the operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline and refrain from further attacks on Hungary's energy security," Orban wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
According to him, Kiev has been unable to accept Hungary's position on the Ukrainian conflict for the past four years. The Prime Minister stressed that the Hungarian people do not want to finance Ukraine and pay more for energy resources.
According to Orban, the suspension of Russian oil supplies by the Ukrainian authorities contradicts the national interests of Budapest and jeopardizes the stable provision of affordable energy to Hungarian families. He also called on Kiev to get rid of the "anti-Hungarian policy."
On the same day, Zelensky, in response to calls from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to restore the Druzhba oil pipeline as soon as possible, said that this could not happen quickly.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on February 23 that the country had blocked the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and the allocation of a loan to Ukraine worth €90 billion due to Kiev's shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline. He also noted that Hungary regards Kiev's suspension of the transit of Russian oil through Druzhba as an encroachment on its sovereignty.
