Couples planning pregnancy are advised to undergo a basic medical examination to assess their reproductive health and reduce possible risks. Oksana Gaivoronskaya, a reproductive therapist and deputy director for Scientific and methodological work at the Clinic of Reproductive Medicine +1, told Izvestia on March 2.

According to the expert, a conscious approach to starting a family increases the requirements for medical training, since reproductive opportunities naturally decrease with age.

"The examination of a couple planning to conceive is especially important for people over the age of 30, it is easier for a young body to cope with the stress during pregnancy, even if there is some kind of emergency problem. However, it certainly won't hurt young parents to take the minimum necessary tests," the reproductive therapist noted.

As Gaivoronskaya emphasized, the basic list of examinations for women includes clinical and biochemical blood tests, testing of immunity to rubella (IgG and IgM antibodies), assessment of thyroid function (TSH and AT-TPO), as well as determination of homocysteine and vitamin D levels.

In addition, it is mandatory to consult a reproductologist with an expert ultrasound of the pelvic organs on the 10-15 th day of the cycle to assess the ovarian reserve. Smears for infections and cytological examination are also performed, especially after the age of 35.

"An important point: it is impractical to take extensive hormonal panels "just in case" with a regular cycle and no complaints. The list can be expanded only according to specific indications that the doctor will identify," Gaivoronskaya said.

Equally important is the preparation of the future father, the specialist added. The man is shown a detailed spermogram with an assessment of sperm morphology and a MAR test. Before the study, it is recommended to exclude alcohol, visit baths and observe sexual abstinence for two to three days. In addition, both partners are tested for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and also determine the blood type and Rh factor.

"But the first and most important thing to start with is a joint visit to a reproductologist. Then you definitely won't miss anything and won't spend extra money on unnecessary tests," Gaivoronskaya concluded.

Starting from March 1, Russia plans to launch a register containing information about women receiving medical care in the field of obstetrics and gynecology in connection with pregnancy. It was clarified that the system will record the date of registration and the duration of pregnancy at the moment, information on the use of assisted reproductive technologies, as well as data on the outcome of pregnancy and the presence of critical obstetric conditions.
