- The Russian Foreign Ministry reported on the transformation of the Arctic into an arena of confrontation with the West
The West is turning the Arctic into a new arena of confrontation and military-political confrontation. This was announced on February 25 by Vladislav Maslennikov, Director of the Department of European Affairs of the Russian Foreign Ministry, senior Russian official in the Arctic Council, during the discussion "The Donro Doctrine: Trump and Greenland" at the Valdai Club.
"We see that through the efforts of our Western colleagues, this region, which for decades remained, in fact, on the periphery of geopolitical battles, is rapidly losing its status as a zone of low tension and is turning into a new arena of confrontation and military-political confrontation," he said.
He noted that NATO is actively engaged in the militarization of the Arctic.: It strengthens the offensive potential, increases military training activity and involves countries that are not related to the Arctic region in the process.
At the same time, Maslennikov stressed that Moscow does not threaten anyone in the Arctic and strives to resolve all issues through diplomatic means.
On February 11, Reuters reported that NATO had launched the Arctic Sentry mission to expand its military presence in the Arctic. It will coordinate the military presence of the alliance's forces in the region.
Later it became known that NATO plans to deploy tens of thousands of military personnel for exercises as part of Operation Arctic Sentry. Arctic Sentry will be led by the Joint Forces Command in Norfolk (JFC Norfolk). The exercises began in Europe on the same day.
In turn, the Russian Embassy in Denmark said that Moscow would take appropriate measures in response to the NATO operation.
