The scientist warned about possible weak magnetic storms on Earth
Weak magnetic storms may occur on Earth in the near future due to the appearance of a new active region on the Sun. Honorary Doctor of Sciences, lecturer Sergey Chumakov told Izvestia about this on February 25.
"There is nothing abnormal about the appearance of a new active region on the Sun. It appeared after there was some lull in the central star of our Solar system, and its appearance was a matter of time," Chumakov said.
According to the scientist, there are currently no signs of extremely powerful solar activity. However, such areas often become a source of flares of varying strength and coronal mass ejections. According to the preliminary forecast, possible outbreaks this time will be moderate, however, as the scientists noted, weak magnetic storms may occur on Earth in the near future.
In addition, he noted that we are talking about a planned increase in solar activity within the cycle, and not about a short-term surge. In the near future, the number of active areas may increase, which may lead to a slight increase in magnetic storms. Nevertheless, it is expected that they will not reach a level that poses a serious threat to technology or human health, the expert concluded.
On February 22, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that there are currently no spots on the Earth-facing side of the Sun. According to scientists, sunspots are associated with the concentration of the magnetic field. They are considered to be an almost permanent element of the solar surface.
