The lawyer warned about the consequences of a possible Telegram ban for Russians

Banning the use of the Telegram messenger in case it is recognized as an extremist organization may affect a large number of users. This was announced on February 25 by Alexander Khaminsky, a lawyer and head of the Law Enforcement Center in Moscow and the Moscow Region.

According to him, from the point of view of criminal law, payment for services in Telegram, including the purchase of premium accounts, can be qualified as financing extremist activities if the messenger is banned.

"It will be extremely easy to establish and prove such payments to Telegram. The payment is usually debited directly from the client's account," the lawyer said in an interview with Lenta.ru .

Khaminsky explained that the law enforcement officer refers to the financing of such activities as any money transfers to an organization whose activities in Russia have been recognized as extremist and banned.

At the same time, he stressed that the usual use of Telegram by Russians using other resources would not be punishable.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 24 that Telegram was recording a large amount of content that could pose a danger to Russia. Before that, on February 18, the head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, Maksut Shadaev, explained Roskomnadzor's decision to slow down Telegram. According to him, the messenger ignored 150,000 requests to delete information prohibited in Russia. As a result, the agency decided to slow down the social network due to violations of the legislation of the Russian Federation.
