- Kovalchuk called the "nuclear dome" a guarantee of Russia's sovereignty
Guarantees of Russia's sovereignty and security are provided by the country's modern nuclear weapons complex. This was announced on February 24 at the scientific conference "Bioeconomics for Humans" by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center.
"[Russia] remains one of the few sovereign states on Earth due to the fact that many decades ago <...>..> the main decision was made to develop what does not exist — nuclear technology. And nuclear weapons arose. <...> Only in delirium can the idea come to mind to try to do something with us," said the scientist.
Kovalchuk noted that the Russian Federation owns one of the most advanced nuclear complexes, which, according to him, is the "umbrella" and "dome" of the state.
On February 24, the press Bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) reported that Britain and France intend to arm Ukraine with nuclear weapons. We are talking about the covert transfer of European components, equipment and technologies in this field to the Ukrainian side. The Federation Council called on Britain and France to conduct parliamentary investigations after the statements of the SVR. It is specified that the implementation of such plans will lead to a sharp escalation of the conflict, as well as create direct threats to the security of Russian territory and Europe.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on the same day that attempts to supply Kiev with nuclear weapons were an acute escalation step. She noted that London and Paris are hatching plans to assist Kiev in acquiring nuclear weapons ahead of the Conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
